A technology I think hasn't been tapped into enough is Augmented Reality. Virtual Reality has been increasing in popularity in recent years but mainly in video gaming. I think the AR technology can be implemented to create a new type of new media. Instead of replacing your reality, Augmented Reality adds to it. A big issue with social media is the disconnect from reality, augmented reality can open up a whole new way of connecting with people anywhere in the world. My idea involves some type of wearable lenses, either glasses or contact lenses (way in the future), that overlays a visual on top of what you normally see. Imagine a world where you can talk to a relative on the other side of the world, but see them two feet in front of you. Imagine a world where no one owns a TV, because you can just watch Netflix, YouTube, or a Podcast on any empty wall with AR lenses. It can also be used to play video games, but also game-ify real life. Imagine there is a health program where you s...

P2P

File sharing is the basic process of transferring files/data from one person to another. Typical tools for filesharing include Google Drive, DropBox, iCloud. Typically when we send files to our friends, we first upload to the file and it is hosted by one of these services. When you attach a file to an email, it is hosted and stored by your email provider's servers. These services are not P2P File sharing. P2P file sharing requires a special client that connects you to a peer to peer network. The example Jaimie King uses is gnutella. When a user in the network requests a file, the client connects you to other users in the network that have the file downloaded and are seeding it and you downloaded pieces of the file from each user in the network that are seeding/sharing it with you. Other popular clients include uTorrent, BitTorrent, and in the past LimeWire. There are many uses for P2P file sharing. The most common is piracy, where people illegally download movies, tv shows, and...

Wiki So Far

So far on the Wiki I've contributed to the Fashion and Social Networking sections. I've been watching a lot of TikToks lately so I added to the TikTok section the 5 most followed TikTokers, according to SocialBlade.com. I'm also interested in streetwear so I made some changes to the Fashion section. I updated the Kith section and added some more brands they have collaborated with, I also updated their locations as they have added some since the last time that section was edited on the Wiki. I also added an Aimé Leon Dore section, another NY based fashion brand like Kith. I made sure to upload a picture of the brand's logo to match the other brand sections. Looking forward I still want to add a section about Virgil Abloh to the Fashion Designers part of the wiki. I also want to add information about Twitch, Mixer, and streaming in general with the information I learned researching for my term paper. You can stay up to date with my wiki contributions with this link: ...

Privacy

Privacy remains a prevalanet issue in our modern connected world. It seems like every week there is a new data leak that threatens the personal information of millions. We have seen this in social media with the Cambridge Analytica scandal that Facebook was involved in. There's also the concept that every smart device with a microphone is listening to whatever we are saying. How many times have you started talking about something, only to see advertisements for it on Facebook and Instagram the next time you open it? We can blame data brokers such as Acxiom for this, who collect our data and find out our interests using their tech, and then sell it off to third party companies to target us in their advertisting. Data leaks and data mining aren't the only threat to privacy. With more and more people become viral, there's very little anonymity left in the world. People who go viral are frequently doxxed (have their identiy and personal information exposed) and are harrassed....

Advice

If I was hired by Baruch College to improve the school using new media, I would make the following changes. I would create a Baruch TikTok account as it's one of the fastest growing social media apps and I would have USG post relatable videos for students to watch and learn about the school or upcoming events. This would also increase the awareness of the school to potential students as TikTok promotes videos to people by geo-graphic location. In addition to this, I would also post videos to Baruch's Instagram stories. I would also create a Baruch wiki and incorporate it into the Freshman Seminar classes for first year students. It would allow them to learn about the school and the surrounding area, and they can add to it themselves as well with anything intersting they find out on their own. Lastly, I would work with WBMB Baruch College radio to create a podcast where they interview current and past Baruch students, in an effort to promote student life within Baruch.

Creativity and New Media

Image
Building upon our last two topics, I wanted to do something creative in a virtual world and incorporate one of my old projects. Over 6 years ago when I was a Sophomore in high school I created a 3D CAD Model of Thomas The Tank Engine for my Intro to Engineering class. I created the model in Tinkercad and it can be viewed here: https://www.tinkercad.com/things/eyyGT58A08B-thomas-the-tank-engine Now I wanted to take a step further and downloaded the model as a schematic file, so I could import it into a virtual world in Minecraft, to do this I utilized the MCEdit tool. Here you can see Thomas as a virtual world in Minecraft: Excuse the phone picture as my screenshot tool is broken.

HW Creativity

There are many ways that new media tools can be used in creative ways. One very popular method is creating satirical parodies, which are protected under fair use of copyrighted material. However as seen in the reading, "Disney Tolerates a Rap Parody of Its Critters. But Why?", it states that Disney views parodies as stealing their content but only enforces on a case by case basis. It can because parodies such as the example given in the reading of the Crank That music, aren't detrimental to the cartoon's image and even boost its popularity as a form of free advertising for Disney. This user-generated creativity is an opportunity to capitalize off of. As seen in the recent reading, How user-generated content can improve your social media marketing strategy , having the actual end-users of a product or service share their beliefs and thoughts through creative videos is a very effective form of advertising and results in sales. A popular form is video testimonials, and ...
